Map Geodetic Institute Copenhagen 19111914 Gunnlaugur Bjarnarson Thorfinnurs paternal grandfather and his wife Helga Thorvardardottir had 13 children including Kristine born 1843 the mother of the Martins who lived near Sandy Bay MB and Brynjolfur Gunnlaugson born 1847 who emigrated to Canada in 1878 at the age of thirty-one. He is the father of the Gunnlaugsons who lived near Baldur Manitoba. More on them can be found in the R.M. of Argyle history. Johannes Gunnlaugsson Thorfunnurs father. Karolinas father-in-law. Born Aug 21 1829 in Brieddalur. Died 1876 age 46 in Iceland. He was christened at Heydalir Church when his father was working at Jorvik. His mother had been living at Hoskuldsstadir East Hills with her par-ents. When he was two his parents moved to nearby Disastadir in the district of Breiddalur Broad Valley in eastern Iceland. The central town would likely have been called Breidal. When he was five they moved to Flaga flat marsh. At the time of his confirmation in 1844 the minister wrote that he is knowl-edgeable and well behaved. He worked on his fathers farm along with his brothers. At age 31 on September 11 1860 Johannes married Valgerdur Finnbogadottir. They farmed and she gave birth to thirteen children only four of whom survived the hardship caused when volcanic ash covered their farm-land. Valgerdur Finnbogadottir Thorfinnurs mother. Karolinas mother-in-law Born Feb 9 1829 Died around 1897 age 68 Valgerdur married Johannes Gunnlaugsson on Spt 11 1860 at age 31. In 1886 at the age of 57 when she had been a widow for ten years she emigrated with her children. They lived for a short while in Winnipeg before moving to Bru north-east of Baldur MB. She died at the home of her brother-in-law Brynjolfur Gunnlaugsson at age 68 11 years after her arrival in Canada. Johannes and Valgerdur had thirteen children. The four who survived to adulthood are 1 Thorfinnur Johannesson. February 8 1863 - June 21 1944. see below 2 Helga Johannesdottir Aug 17 1866 - Apr 24 1944 age 78 at Gimli. She married Bjorn Runolfsson. They had no children but adopted Margret Reykalin. 1 Kristbjorg Helga Johannesdot-tir Jan 28 1868 - 1961 in Bal-dur. Imm. 1892 In 1886 when Kristbjorg was 18 her health was still very poor when her mother and three of her siblings departed for Canada. They left her with her uncle because it would be foolish to pay passage for someone who would likely die en route. Later Kristbjorg told of how she cried bitterly on her uncles shoulder. To pacify her he promised that on her twen-ty-first birthday he would personally grant her the money to go join them never believing she would live to do it. She used to tell of how she inwardly mustered the strength to recover. The money was given and it would have been a lot. Icelanders felt you were only as good as your word so if he had reneged he would have been regarded as un-trustworthy. The minister might have used his failure for a sermon on the bearing of false witness and he would have been shunned by many possibly for years. Kristbjorg went to Manitoba 1892 at age 24 and went on to live to the fi-ne old age of 93. She married Marteinn Martin a 1st cousin. She died in 1961 likely from a heart attack. She and Marteinn had no children. They adopted Flor-ence Reykalin Margarets sister when she was still a small girl. Florence mar-ried Bjarni Barney Thorleifson from Mozart Sask. in 193. Florence had only one pregnancy which ended in miscarriage. Bjarni thought this a punishment of God and he became quite depressed and later was a heavy drinker. Bjarni was not re-lated to other Thorleifsons from Baldur. 4 Jon Jack Johannesson fra Breidal Dec 8 1871 - 1958. Immigrated 1886. After arriving in Winnipeg in 1886 Jon worked in a liv-ery stable for a year . When he arrived in the Municipality of Argyle MB there was already anoth-er Jon Johannesson. He unofficially took the last name of frau Breidal pron. bray-dl means from Breidal and his children were given the surname Breidal. More on these brothers and sisters can be found in the R.M. of Argyle history. Thorfinnur Johannesson pron. yo-hannuson Karolinas husband Born February 8 1863 in Flaga at Breidallur Iceland. Died June 6 1944 at Baldur MB. Burried in Baldur ceme-tery. When Thorfinnur was a child they lived in a district where there was much volcanic activity. The children specifically Jon and Thorfinnur were quite at ease with this reality and for ex-ample used to make use of the pots of different coloured volcan-ic boiling mud to paint pictures on the rocks near their farm. This acceptance of their environment however become less when Mount Hecla the most active volca-no erupted and westerly winds blew ash over the land. At their home at Breidal-lur vegetation suffered. Farm animals went hungry and then the people. This low-ered their immunity to communicable disease. By late in the winter Thorfinnurs age 14 health had deteriorated until he could only crawl. A number of his broth-ers and sisters had already died. An uncle who had left the valley to become a fish-erman got word of their plight and came to them bringing a small keg of cod liver oil. He made Thorfinnur promise to drink half a cup every day until his strength and health returned. There are some who like it but most people say cod liver oil tastes horrible. As well Thorfinnur had to promise to crawl out into the sunshine as soon as the sun warmed the turf sufficiently for him to lie there and expose his body to its rays. The cure worked and four of them survived. When Thorfinnur was twelve the family vacated their home at Flaga and split up to stay with various relatives. When he was 13 when his father died and 10 years later his mother Valgerdur decided to move to Canada with her brother Gudmundur. The family was reunited except for Kristbjorg who stayed in Iceland. Thorfinnur emigrated in 1886 at age 23. He said later that it was the unjust laws as set by the Danish overlords affecting farm labourers that led to his deci-sion. They made it to Winnipeg and that fall moved out to Bru District in the Mu-nicipality of Argyle MB. Three years later he married 21-year-old Karolina Ran-nveig Andresdottir on Dec. 19 1890. This was not older than usual. Men were sup-posed to wait until they could afford to sup-port a family and teenage girls are more prone to life-threatening complications dur-ing childbirth. They resided in the Bru dis-trict for five years. In 1893 they moved back to Winnipeg. After two years they moved on to the Icelandic River Riverton district. They felt they would do better since Thorfinnur could augment their farm in-come by fishing in Lake Winnipeg. As well he worked seasonally in the sawmill man-aged by Kristjan Finnson. He found it diffi-cult to provide for his growing family and in 1900 he sold his house to Pall Vidalin. After three years renting from Gudleifur Dalmann at Mkraveillir they returned to Argyle now with seven children. In 1903 Thor-funnur and his two sons twelve-year-old Johannes and nine-year-old Ingi drove his team of oxen White and Bright and his small herd of cattle to their new home a few miles northeast of Baldur. Joe and Ingi chased the animals on foot. For food they had dry bread which they had brought along and fresh milk from their cows. After a few years they were back to Icelandic River but returned to Argyle in about 1918 when close friend Hoseas Josephsson gave them a quarter-section farm after sickness forced him to give up heavy work. It was two miles east of Baldur a mile north and another mile north-east. Thorfinnur kept his cattle out on the farm and they made their home in Baldur in a small house on Shultz Street. This street was always called Coffee Street because there were so many Icelanders and they drank so much coffee. Ice-landers coffee was made in a bag. This went into the metal coffeepot on the stove and was held in place with a wire ring and handle. Boiled water was poured over it to fill the pot and it was allowed to run through and soak for ten minutes. In town Thorfinnur worked as a carpenter and he kept four dairy cat-tle - beautiful big Redpoles that gave a lot of milk. All his cat-tle were well cared for. Karolina tended about 25 chickens and had a few ducks who could make use of the pond at the bottom of the lot. Thorfunnur was a self-educated man reading both Icelandic and English at a time when it was considered fortunate to do either. It had long been the tradition in Iceland to teach boys to read the Bible and to write if possible. In most cases being able to read was a requirement before a young man would be allowed confirmation into the Lutheran Church. Thorfinnur was quiet intelligent and widely read. He read for hours every day and served as custodian of the Icelandic library held in a one-room building behind the Lutheran Church. He preferred material that would teach you s ome-thing and he would throw out a lesser book rather then give it away. He believed in a just compassionate God but would rarely read the Bible and only occasionally attended church - usually just for communion and special occasions. His children were all baptized but he saw no need for confirmation. His memory often astound-ed people and they admired his ability to see things from different points of view. Thorfunnur seemed to suffer few after effects of his malnutrition and he died likely of cancer there was no surgery on June 6 1944 at age 81. He is buried in Baldur Cemetery. Andres Andy Johannesson one of Fijolas chil-dren is seen here with his grandfather sometime around 1935. Clarence the Fjolas oldest son recalls Grandpa was nearly 60 years of age when I came into this world. My first recollection of him was when I went with him to say good-bye to Rev. Hallgrimson who was returning to Iceland. I was only two years of age but I remember having coffee in the kitchen and then outside the door the minister reached down and ruffled my hair as he bade me good-bye. I did not ap-preciate getting my hair ruffled even at that young age In approximately 1927 there was a church convention likely in Baldur where I again kept Grandpa company and remember him getting up and speaking for at least an hour. Following that the chairman Ole Andersen made the remark that as the conven-tion progressed they should take into consideration many of the remarks Thorfin-nur had made. Another story of Grandpa though I do not know what year it took place. He worked on the first elevator built in Manitoba and I believe that to have been at Emerson. All went well until if was time to shingle the roof and Grandpa was the only man left on the job. He did it alone wearing leath-er boots. Thorfinnur built and repaired the wooden sidewalks in Baldur and on that job his favourite horse stepped on a nail. For that to heal takes five to six months. Grandpa made a leather sock and filled it with some bran and disinfectant and that sock lasted all that time until the horse's foot got better. I would have to say that Grandpa's biggest heartache in life was losing his son Pall in W.W. I. He had man-aged to buy a threshing machine and when Pall did not come back to operate it it was disposed of. He was the only boy still at home who wanted to farm. Thorfinnur was self taught and his leisure time was always spent reading. He was thought of as a very intelligent man and could recite poetry Icelandic from morning until night. Thorfunnurs ability to forecast weather a day ahead of time or for the coming season was sought from him by many people. He liked to discuss politics so there were many political arguments at his home. The things that Thorfinnur turned out from his blacksmith shop considering the equipmen t they had in those days was almost beyond belief. He got the equipment from his son Pall who had bought it not long before joining the army. Thorfunnur made a shot gun that is in the possession of Jeanette Gunnlaugson. In some way some years ago my brother Lloyd was able to track it down and bought it. Something that grandpa took to the grave with him was his knowledge of soldering broken tines on a fork. There would not be any bulge and the tine would never break again where he had soldered it. Many years later from another source I was told that I was a very good stack builder and that was really a compliment as that was something Grandpa was meticulous about. A scary incident for me was one time when Grandpa went to chase the neighbour's bull away. The bull charged and Grandpa who probably weighed 160 pounds grabbed the bull by the horns and flipped him over. The bull got up and charged him again and again Grandpa flipped him again. The bull got up and peacefully took off for home When I was about 11 yrs. of age I went shopping with Grandpa at Kadrie's store. Kadrie was a Turkish man who had been a travelling salesman with a small covered wagon called a peddlers caravan. On starting home Grandpa took a dizzy spell and crashed to the sidewalk. My Uncle Ingi was soon found and on that Sat-urday night took us and the groceries home. The following Monday it was mowing time and being along with Grandpa and passing the time snaring gophers I hap-pened to look up and saw the horses had snagged the mower on a telegraph pole and Grandpa was laying about eighty feet further back. He had had another one of his dizzy spells. I managed to back the horses up and free the mower. The haying had to go on so I sat on the mower in front of Grandpa and drove the horses while Grandpa controlled the lever that lifted the cutting bar over obstacles. After a few days Grandpa got over it and never did take the time to see a doctor. Those many years ago Thorfinnur did not like rubber wear on your feet and he already understood how there is a continuous electric current passing down and your feet will stay a lot healthier if that is not re-tarded. A clothing store would not have done much business with Thorfinnur and Karolina. Grandma had a lovely black dress she used on most special occasions during the approximately forty years I knew her. That was the dress she was buried in. Grandpa had a suit for his wedding and then was given a secondhand suit by Wally Anderson to wear at his fiftieth wedding anniversary at the Baldur Memorial Hall and also at his funeral at Baldur Lutheran Church. One thing I forgot to mention is that Grandpa took care of the cows and Grandma the chickens. Grandma never ate eggs and Grandpa did not drink milk. Another quirk only Grandpa's sister Kristbjorg could knit suitable socks that he could wear. Valgerdur Bjornsdottir Karolinas mother. Died January 25 1961 age 91 Baldur Manitoba. Buried Baldur Cemetery. Her granddaughter Thora writes She was a one-on-one type of person. Of my grandparents there is no doubt that my Amma Karolina made the greatest impression on me and it is her stories that have stayed with me the longest. She was over fifty when I was born B which was old in 1925 B so I of course remember her only as old very quiet and unassuming but firm in her own way. I believe Amma Karolina's child-hood was happy. Karolina never wanted to come to Canada and would gladly have walked back to Iceland were it possible. This hatred of the New World was not unu-sual and back in Iceland many were angered by the loss of their loved ones to the new fad of emigration. The emigrants were told they would be so much better off if they moved to Canada so Amma Karolina always hated immigration agent Sigur-dur Kristopherson for his exaggerations. She would comment when the occasion arose It is no better to be poor in Canada than it is to be poor in Iceland. Fre-quently on a summer evening she would raise her eyes to the wooded rise beyond the backyard to the last remains of twilight in the western sky and say There is nothing more beautiful than the swan song in the evening when you are roaming on the heath in Iceland. Black Swans On these occasions when she le t her senti-mentality show she described Prestkvammi in detail. When I visited the farmstead in Iceland the tears ran down my cheeks. She had described it well and it was beautiful. The heath had a delicate hue of purple from the blooming Heather . It sloped gently down to the 'b' pron. bi the buildings of the farmyard and racks which still showed the placement of the old original home where she had been born. Lower down the slope of the hill was a gently meandering river winding its way to the North Atlantic. Down on the lush green river slopes a little church was sur-rounded by a stone fence about two feet wide on top of which alpine flowers and many daisies Baldursbra flourished. Sheep roamed at random with no sign of a shepherd and no apparent need for one. In 1888 a boat load of cattle left Iceland loaded to the point of standing or lying in one spot. Along with 19-year-old Karolina were other immigrants who spent the whole trip on the open upper deck sitting in their assigned seat B day and night sun and rain. Only three were women or girls. Under each seat was your personal pot made of wood and you would pee in front of everyone and then dump it over the side. When it rained or the wind swept up a spray you would protect yourself with an oiled sheepskin worn like a poncho. When the ocean voyage final-ly came to an end at Montreal the new immigrants made their way by whatever means to Duluth Minnesota and then on to the Red River system and up to Winni-peg. By horse and by foot they travelled west to the edge of the frontier at the Bru district south-west of Cypress River. At this time most teenage girls worked somewhere as a housemaid and Ka-rolina was immediately sent to work at the home of Kristjan and Thordis Jonsson. C.B. Jonsson a mile south of where Bru Church originally stood. There was no church there until around 1907. About the first chore assigned was to go down to the creek for a pail of water. It was only a short distance from the house. Karolina could find no well or water barrel trap so she went back to the house and asked for further direction. Couldn't you find the creek. Yes. Well dip it out of the creek. Filled with the memory of the beautiful crystal clear water in Iceland she was astounded to think of dipping a pail of drinking water out of the stagnant creek where a sow was wallowing in the mud As a result for her remaining seventy some years Amma drank a lot of milk and coffee made from water that had been well boiled. She rarely if ever drank water. Yes she was stubborn in her own way and she disliked Canada. She refused the language of the country. Even if she could not help learning to understand English she would not let on that she could unless it was absolutely necessary. Her grandchildren had to speak Icelandic if they wanted to communicate with her which we did. But there were occasions when we found out her secrets. She could speak English to her neighbour Mrs. Ag-nes Mathers when no one else was around or when she thought no one was around. And when Oscar Finnson came back home from overseas after WWII Am-ma was so glad to see him and they talked away to beat the band he in English and she in Icelandic. When Amma Karolina was younger she would gladly have returned to Ice-land but as she got older it was quite the reverse. I do not believe she would have returned. The news from Iceland in the local Icelandic newspapers told her things were changing a lot over there and she was afraid they might have changed too much. Somehow there was security in those beloved memories. Late in the autumn of 1890 Karolina realized she was with child. As she said later it certainly did not take her long to let Thorfinnur know that he had to marry her. She never forgave herself for having had to get mar-ried. On December 19th they said their vows in Grund Church - the first couple to be married there following its dedication. It was unfinished and they had to step over loose lumber to go up to the altar. Their witnesses were Pall and Gudny Fridfinnsson. Johannes Joe was born the following May second. In 1893 they gave up the homestead because it was a part of the marsh and was under water every spring or during a wet summer. They went to Winnipeg for a few months where Ingolfur Ingi was born on December 20 in a little house on William Av-enue very near the present site of the Health Science Centre. From there they went to Riverton and in 1903 they were lured back to Argyle close to Baldur by their kinsfolk. Joe was 12 and Fjola was a baby. They had a one-room house with ship-lap siding thin lumber with a lapping lip. In the winter the poor house would sweat terribly and Grandmother's great-est difficulty was keeping her baby dry in a room which continuously dripped. Pneumonia was dreaded and one child had already died. And so life continued B more babies and more poverty but still enough with their reliable hens and cows. At least they were no poorer than most others in the community. Karolina was a home-loving person but she kept abreast of current events by reading the Logberg an Icelandic newspaper published in Winnipeg. She read it as soon as it arrived and their bias became her bias. She never read Heimskrigla like-ly because it supported the Liberals. She read a great deal though not as much as her husband. Thora tells she spoke proper Icelandic in an elegant way the way ed-ucated people in Iceland spoke it and would gently correct my Icelandic until I spoke the way she did. In 1988 when I visited Iceland many remarked that I spoke in the old way. One said I sounded like the sort of old professor who refused to use all the new slang. Amma Karolina was a very healthy person. I remember her having a bout with gout in her hands on one occasion. She did have high blood pressure in her later years and died of a stroke in her own home in Baldur. Dr. Cyril Hamwee sat with her refusing to move her to the hospital. He knew it was her desire to die in her humble shanty. She died on January 25 1961 at age 91 and was buried in the Baldur Cemetery. Karolinas grandson Clarence recallsits hard to find words for a woman who day after day worked from seven in the morning til eleven at night and a lot of that time over a hot stove. My grandpa and grandmas house was always a gath-ering place for visitors and with what little Amma had she always scraped up a lunch or a meal. Her daughter Andrea most of the time when she came to visit would bring some-thing to help her mother out. Then in the fall she would bring about a dozen jars of cha-cha green tomato pickles that was also called chow-chow which Grandma loved and with every meal that com-ing winter that would be included. Over in Iceland they did not have forks and spoons so Grandma carried on with the tradition of eating her meals with a knife. She managed as well as some would with chopsticks Soup was drunk straight from the bowl and then the chunks were scooped up with the knife. Karolina al-ways carried her knife about eight inches long in her apron or skirt pocket. Later each person carried a spoon and a two-pronged fork made of wood of horn. Once in Canada Thorfinnur carved many spoons out of cow horn. Grandma who to me was the dear lady with the short legs and big angel wings became an accomplice to a criminal offence A civil offence For two days she took food and supplies to a namesake of hers It was Lena Haldoras daughter whose daughter also called Lena was married to Jon Jonsson from Piney near Emerson. that had kidnapped her grandchild grand-niece also called Lena and hid with it in the bush while the authorities searched for her. After a break-up in the family she did not want her son-in-law to wind up with the child. Lena and Jon were separated and reconciled several times. One time I slept in the same bedroom with Grandma and after a hot day's work over a hot stove she would come to bed and remark about how cool the bed felt and we would always finish the day saying The Lord's Prayer together. The Children of Thorfinnur and Karolina 1st Johannes Johannesson Born May 2 1891 in Argyle. Died Dec. 18 1967. Buried in Baldur Cemetery. His niece Thora writes Joe suffered as a result of whoop-ing cough and it affected his back. Anaemia and a general loss of resistance caused rickets and this was one of the main reasons why so many children died or were crippled. Throughout Joes life his hump-back gradually got worse. During WWI he served a brief stint in the 222nd Bttn. of the Canadian Army which was being trained at Baldur but it was too much and he was given a medical discharge. Joe dug graves for two dollars but only if people could afford it. For his friends or loved ones there was no charge and he never charged for the grave of a child. For many years he worked for Mr. Bray the local veterinarian and auctioneer helping in the garden keeping the lawn removing the snow. When Mr. Bray was acting as auctioneer Joe was always there pitching in and he often gave a hand to his son Burton Bray unloading the Baldur Transfer. Uncle Joe never married and probably only had one love in his life Lena and he carried that love to the grave. She was promised by her parents to Jon Jonsson and she obeyed their command and raised a fine family in spite of a stormy marriage. Uncle Joe was always so fond of dogs and I remember Patsy a real watch-dog even if just a terrier. Joe's dogs were like him - totally dedicated to their friends. Joe was thoughtful to those he respected and loved and totally the opposite to others - and everyone with eyes or ears knew exactly where they stood with Joe. Joes health degenerated stead-ily the last few years of his life and he finally died after several months in the hospital. I had his grave marked. It seemed to be all I could do for someone who had been so good and received so little in return. 2nd Andrea Valgerdur Johannesson Born April 27 1892 Argyle. Died July 7 1973 at Killarney. Buried at Brandon. Her niece Thora writes snow blew round the window cas-ing and on to the bed when midwife Valgerdur Bjornsdottir delivered Andrea. It was a raging blizzard and she barely made it to the house in time for the birth. On October 26 1916 at age 24 Andrea married Gustav Bjornson May 12 1896 - Dec. 15 1974. She kept a garden to supply the familys needs and she took good care of her poul-try so they always had enough. The proceeds of turkeys usually covered the cost of winter clothing and Christmas. Her husband Gustav Gusti pron Goo-stee suf-fered from polio or as it was called then infantile paralysis. One skinny thigh showed the result all of his life and he never had a lot of energy. At about the age of fourteen he was with a friend who was carrying a rifle which accidentally dis-charged killing another youth. The resulting shock remained apparent throughout the years. Andrea had to be the promoter and pusher to make a go of the business of living. You could feel neither like nor dislike for Gusti. At one time a midwife had to order him out of bed when his wife was in labour. Andrea was fortunate in having a very faithful mother-in-law who lived with them. She would clear the ta-ble do the dishes and pick up after nine kids she ironed endlessly and seldom do I remember her uttering a word. I never remember Auntie Andrea as being really happy. She would laugh momentarily while in conversation but that was about it. She chewed her nails beyond anyone's imagination so you could not see a ny re-maining nail. I guess she was nervous. In spite of knowing Andrea for some forty years I never really felt I knew her. 3nd Ingolfur Johannesson Born December 20 1893 on William Ave in Winni-peg. Died August 3 1963 at age 69. Buried in Baldur Cemetery Ingi was photographed with his brother Pall the younger of the two in the photo more often than with any of the other siblings. They seem to have spent much of their youth together. Ingi married Sigrun Kristjana Reykdal October 23 1896 - April 28 1988 in Frelsis Grund Church on March 25 1917 at age 24. Runa was daughter of Jon Kristian Reykdal May 30 1869 - Dec 8 1937 and Sig-urborg Petursson Reykdal Feb 21 1874 - June 5 1964 The wedding took place at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Baldur and witnesses were Salin Sigrun's sister and Hannes Harry Gunnlaugson. Ingi and Sigrun started out renting a Y2 sec-tion four miles south and three miles east of Baldur. In the early1920's as their fami-ly grew to four children he was employed as a butcher for Joe Lyons Butcher shop in Baldur. Ingi had taught himself to cut meat from books. In a Model T he drove the beef ring from Baldur to Neelin. Their was no re-frigeration except for the ice from the butch-er s cellar and that meant butchering and cut-ting it up in the evening delivering it first thing in the morning and being back in Bal-dur before noon. Then home for a nap. He might have stayed in this business were it not for severe headaches. He often needed to car-ry large and cold sides of beef and a doctor thought his condition might improve if he found a different line of work. His daughter Thora writes in 1927 they bought a quarter section two miles north and one mile west 27-5-14 but lost it by foreclosure when unable to meet a payment in 1931. This was due to the fall of prices after the Wall Street crash. The price of wheat went from in 1928 down to 25 cents and barley from to 10 cents. At this time if you failed to make a payment the lender could foreclose and then you lost everything. You would be much worse of than if you had just rented. Ingi had bought it for 4500 and had paid out 2400 including interest and this was a time when you could hire a strong labourer for 50 cents an hour. The mortgagor was Gunnlaugur Davidson who died a few years later. His wealth went to his daughters. His sons who inherited nothing always felt bad about it and tried to help out Ingi when they could. There were others who had the habit of wheeling and dealing in foreclosure and their reputation provided many a sad and angry social conversation. It was very unfair and widespread discontent resulted in the Debt Adjustment and the Foreclosure Act. Gunnlaugur's executors were Siggi Anderson and Bjassi B.S. Johnson and true to form in 1935 they foreclosed on Fred and Gudny Joel when they could not meet the last payment on the same farm. That was the year that crops went down with root-rot and had to be burned in the field. And so it was back to rented land out east from April 1931 to October of 1938. It was four miles north and four miles east of Baldur. A number of local farmers were in the same position as Ingi losing their farm and then renting so bankruptcy no longer carried much of a stigma. They had no car for six or seven years but there was always a good garden and they were successful with a variety of poultry so there was always enough on the table. There were sheep too. Though they had to be herded they always carried their own weight. Wool was washed teased and carded and my mother spun it into yarn for socks sweaters and under drawers for the girls - they needed those for the two mile walk - or ski - to Thor school. For several years my dad had a government approved flock of White Leghorns and they sold hatching eggs to Ham-bley Hatcheries and they paid far better than for grocery store eggs. In 1937 equine encephalitis struck horses by the hun-dreds in western Canada and Ingi lost Tom Black Doll a colt called Dan Patch. And there was Bandy such a strange name for a horse Mother a stout stick in one hand and my little hand in the other entered the barnyard. From around the barn came an angry horse. In an unbelievable flash of speed I found myself plucked off the ground and flung into the back seat of the old Model T under the maple tree. In great Viking spirit mother faced the horse stick swinging defiantly. Bandy returned to the paddock. Shortly after Dad re-turned and Bandy was shot. I believe it was 1936 or 37 when we were down at Grandma Reykdals on a Sun-day afternoon in July. The drought was obvious but crops had come along surprisingly well. As Dad and Uncle Carl relaxed in the spacious livingroom Carl observed a darken-ing of the skies. By Jesus I believe it's clouding over for a rain. They went outdoors to confirm their hopes. A strange and immense cloud covered the southern skies. Riding on a high south wind came locusts from the Dakota's - by the millions Not to be mistaken for grasshoppers they had dirty grey extremities but when they spread their colourful wings they displayed their one and only positive attribute. I remember Dad and Carl tak-ing a white sheet down below the hill to shelter themselves in a wheat field and holding it there briefly while the locusts gathered so he could photograph the marauders with an old 1.98 Eaton's Star Special Box Camera. My dad loved our hens. They were our livelihood it sometimes seemed. Eggs served in a multitude of ways were almost always our supper and any day of the week it was hard to beat a chicken dinner. They provided our income to buy so many other ne-cessities. Our chickens were Purebred Leghorns - the roosters were from R.O.P. Record of Performance birds and he shipped graded eggs to Hambley Hatcheries for years. Every year the flock was government inspected. Now you might expect that the hen house would have to meet some rigid specifications. Well we were on rented land and Olser Hammond and Nanton were not about to give you a dime for staples what than more. Dad erected a poplar pole structure and this was surrounded and covered with turf with some salvaged old windows facing the south. Nests were kept clean and roofs whitewashed and there was no trouble with mites or disease. All food was prepared on the farm ground up and mixed according to Dad's own recipe. When Dad didn't show up for his ten or four o'clock coffee or his dinner or supper one of us kids would be sent to call him. So often we would find him sitting on the floor of the chicken house sur-rounded by gently clucking hens. While he gently talked to them in reply he kept chipping away at the great limestone slabs found here and there in the fields chipping it fine to fulfill the needs and craving of the birds. They swallow stones to help their gizzard to grind up their rough food. Ingi started raising purebred Rat Terriers mixed breed Terriers and pure bred Border Collies. They were not registered pure-breds as there were no dog shows. They were crated and sent in to Winnipeg on the train to be sold by a pet shop. I remember the summer of 1935. We had suffered several years of drought and then it rained and it rained and it rained. Such a God send we thought. Growth was lush and the world was clean and beautiful. But it got to the point where it was too much. It was a warm and breezy Sunday. Uncle Oli had come down from Hor-ton MB near Minto and in the morning he my Dad and our neighbour Jon T.H. Johson were looking over the crops. South of the houses there was Thatcher Wheat on one side of the road and Marquis on the other. They marvelled at the beauty of these crops fully headed and waving in the breeze. The day grew warmer and the breeze increased. The humidity remained high like it had been for weeks. Sitting in the parlour Uncle Oli looked out the window Ingi what in the hell is happening to your wheat It was laying down flat with the breeze root rot This along with rust took care of that years crop. Somehow through struggle and perseverance Dad managed to crop enough damned poor chicken feed to take care of the hens for another season. Hens were so often our salvation. In 1938 an old man informed Ingi in strictest confidence that he was planning on giving up the land that he had rented for the past seventeen years. He felt sure it was a better farm than the one Ingi was on. Arrangements were made and we moved to the half section four miles north of Baldur 2-6-14 and 31-5-14 together but on either side of the road. It was owned by a wealthy women in Scotland who had decided to consolidate her investments. She told the agent that if he liked the person renting it to sell it for 1500. This was a very low price and when they were unable to make the last payment there was no foreclosure. Instead the agent said pay it when you can and Ingi did as soon as he could. The reason why the payment could not be make was both strange and unusual. Dad was running a herd of pigs along with the sheep in the page-wire enclosed meadow and there was a deep slough down in one corner. One pig went out onto the snow covered ice and as pigs are wont to do one followed the other. The weight was too great and the ice broke drowning every last pig. It was a terrible loss but humanity prevailed and soon dad was owner of his own land. He resided there until his death in 1963. He was hoeing the garden when a blood vessel burst in his groin. At the hospital in Baldur the doctor first thought it might be appendicitis. Ingi died three days later. Runa stayed on the farm until 1967 except for winters spent at the home of her son Pall in Burnaby BC. My fathers acquaintances were his friends and the circle was large. A trip to town was a visit to the shoeshop to swap stories with Arni Bjornson and the latest news and views of the community aired. Dad loved children and children in turn lavished their affection on him. Those of his grandchildren who had been fortunate enough to know him will never forget the loss they suffered when he died. I do not like to write about my dad because I am so biased. The faults I saw I would hate to talk about - and yet they were there I know he was not perfect. His greatest weakness were debilitating head-aches. My dad always a lover of children comes into my earliest recollections as a hap-py man fooling with us - me on his knee combing his hair while he grimaced accord-ingly. He had a happy disposition and he liked to joke and tell stories. His love of hunt-ing provided a barrel of stories which he told with envious ability. Dancing was a fa-vourite pastimes but I never knew him to drink alcohol not until I was an adult. He liked Red Cap ale which tastes much like the beer that is imported from Iceland. He only smoked in the company of a participating friend never purchasing tobacco for his own use. Something he learned to like in later years was snuff snoose or a nibble of cut plug. My father was never able to spend much more than a few weeks each year at school but he completed grade four with the help of his Auntie Kristjborg and he learned to read both Icelandic and English. He read slowly but he read a lot and absorbed it all. He liked comic strips like Amos and Andy Mutt and Jeff maybe Lord Plushbot-tom or even Little Kitty Higgins. His ability at mental arithmetic was uncanny. Politics was an great interest and his reading taught him a lot about government. Af-ter reading The Jungle by Upton Sin-clair he became a member of the Co-operative Consumers Federation and remained so for the remainder of his life. His interests were the basics of labour and he never supported com-munism or the extremes that developed after J.S.Woodsworths day. The following poem is based on a story told to Al Thorleifson by his Afi Ingi. Tales told by a Grandfather Tales told by a grandfather Live long in a grandsons memory. Tales of things past. Ingi Johannesson used to tell this story About a wolf and my uncle Pall. The heavy January sky hung grey and crystalline Over the hollow prairie morning. Ingi walked back toward the house Snow crunching under his feet as he Wound his way along the cow trail That meandered through the yard past the pump house. Spattered yellow territorial marks Reminded him of the strange dog That had wandered through two days before. The dog - almost wolf - Had been chased off by his two - His dogs kept the farm guarded. It was a good year for wolf hunting. The bounty helped pay for supplies And the dogs gorged themselves on the carcasses. So many wolves around They had already killed several sheep. As he opened the kitchen door The hot wood heat swept over him. The frost-giants are loose today Runa it is bitterly cold. Pall his son came running to greet him. No doubt the child would soon be talking without stop. Bjorn Ingi and Pall Runa followed from her housework. She knew how cold it was. One wood stove couldnt keep the rest of the house warm. Ingi played with the boy as they sat at coffee. When will you check the traps Runa wondered. The wolves made enough noise last night I think one was caught. I will check them this morning he said. The team didnt want to leave the warm barn. Too cold - they tried to bolt but he held them fast. Hitched to the grain wagon scrunch of hoof and skid Jangle of harness and the dogs Yelping behind all seemed to shatter the cold stillness. A white rabbit bounded across the stubble. The flock of crows held silent in the bluff below. He saw the wolf as he drove down to the lowland Crouching tired out after fighting the traps. The seven traps had been set in a deadly circle The bait in the middle. All seven were scattered now and sprung. The grey scruffy mass did not move as the team approached. He had caught himself twice. In his mad tearing of the ground The frightened wolf had just caught himself again. The traps had been far enough apart that He now lay splayed over the torn sod. The low growl was silenced by one blow of the club. No need to waste a shell on this one He was half frozen already. Ingi threw the carcass into the wagon Before the dogs got at it. He set the traps baited them And set off for home. Runa Im going to leave the wolf on the kitchen floor - thaw it out so I can skin it. Yes she called still busy elsewhere. With that Ingi returned to his work in the barn. Some time later Runa noticed that Pall was no longer with her. She listened and heard him in the kitchen. Poor pussy poor pussy he was crooning. A cat in the house No something else. She walked through the door and stopped. The wolf groggily snuffling half standing Head weaving back and forth And Pall cooing softly to the poor hurt pussycat As he stroked its bobbing head. Runa ran - Dont touch that animal Grabbed the gun and Pall and ran for the barn yelling Ingi Ingi She stayed there until she heard the shot. Shown here with his adopted cousins Florence and Margret Reykalin. Buried four miles from Lenns France at the British Military Cemetery. Pall was light hearted and perhaps foolhardy. He and dad were often out hunting or target shooting. Not long before joining the army he had bought blacksmith equipment. He was living with his parents close to Ice-landic River and must have been planning on taking over the farm because after his death in WWI his fa-ther sold his threshing machine since Paul would no longer be around to use it. Ingi often talked of the good times that he and his brother Pall had shared together - most photos of either brother from their youth are of the two of them together. His death brought home the full impact of warespecially since Pall had tried to con-vince Ingi to enlist with him. Ingi chose instead to court Runa. Perhaps in retro-spect Ingi thought he might have been able to keep his reckless brother safe if he had joined him in the trenches. 4th Kristros Helga Johannesson Born August 11 1897 at Icelandic River Died Sept 15 1988 Rose as she was al-ways called was a quiet child and remained quiet all her life. She was an excellent seamstress and a great help in the sewing room and she also she worked in the kitchen. When modern medicine aided her she was considered cured in about 1947. She attempted to reenter the world but was overcome by the many changes and begged to be taken back to the hospital where she felt at home. There she re-mained until her health declined and she was moved to a old folks home in Killar-ney. Herbert raised their children as best he could. He farmed until he moved to Stockton to operate the ferry. Herb was fondly known as a junk collector. He did accumulate a lot of old machinery but by the same token he was often able to sup-ply parts and do repair work for many a farmer in a pinch and he was good at re-pairing implements. There was always an antacid pill in his mouth. He resided in Glenboro until illness forced him to spend most of his time in the Baldur Hospital where he died of cancer. I saw Rose at home after she became ill. She would sit and work as if in a dream her head sideways and downward. The following week she was taken to Brandon Mental. I remember particularly how pretty Rose was like a doll. She had no hair-do to enhance her no makeup to highlight her face but she had a per-fect complexion brown fine hair well combed and the loveliest bluest eyes. I was about nine and I remember venturing over and putting my hand on her knee - she glanced at me and a wisp of a smile crossed her lips - only momentarily but it was like a gift. I was too young to really understand and she was too ill to explain. She came to Grandmother's funeral and again I felt it was like a gift when she singled me out to walk hand in hand to the grave side. Later she talked quite a lot and re-membered everyone and everything. A very very sad existence for such beauty to pass through such as a mist of vapour disappears. 6th Olafur Johannesson. Born 1899 Died 1899 at Riverton on the farm. This infant succumbed to pneumonia which was known as the curse of the young and the friend of the old. It was the cause of death for so many young people and relieved the aged of all of their many miseries. Those who died of it suffered neither greatly nor long. 7th Oli August Johannesson. Later that day he happily announced the news in front of eve-rybody. Ingi and Runa looked surprised but said nothing. In 1947 after Thora married and rented a house in Baldur her mother took her aside and quietly told her Andy could go live with them since it had been her idea to taken him in in the first place. Twice a year she would come to stay with her parents and would clean house for her mother from corner to corner. There was nothing left to clean when Fjola was finished. She died suddenly from a blood-clot in her lung the day before she was to be discharged from a hospital in Winnipeg following surgery for appendicitis. At her funeral service Rev.
