Jonas Petursson a finishing carpenter was born at Holtakot in Rey-kjahverfi in Sudur Pingeirasyslu on the 29th of December 1796. His par-ents were Petur Thorvaldsson and his wife Karitas Jonsdottir who had pre-viously resided at Holtakot but more recently at Fagranes in Adaldal and prior to living at Holtakot at Vadi at Skalfandaflott. From Holtakot they moved out on to Mana at Tjornesi and resided there for seven years - from 1796 to 1803. After that it is uncertain as to their whereabouts. Their children were raised at Husavikurhreppi but up until that time little is known about Jonas except that he was confirmed in 1810 at the age of fourteen. Little is known of his life before he ventures north to Thistilsfirdi at Knutsstodum in Adaldal in the spring of 1835. There he was married to Bjorg Grimnsdottir. Grimmur was surnamed Joakimsson. At Knutsstodum Jonas and Bjorg resided together for one year and then separated once and for all. Their children were born between 1831 and 1837. Later Bjorg married Gudni Sigurdsson an ironsmith and the farmer called Kristjan at Breidmyri was their son. What befell Jonas after he left the home is known to no one until the year 1856 when he moves from the north at Ranjarhofn and commences to reside at Sydri-Tungu. He is then married and has been for some time to Sigridur Jonsdottir Einarsson she had been born at Sandi July 30 1830 thus he must have been about fifty-five and she only 20 years of age. These are Jonas and Bjorg's children 1 Grimmur born at Thistilfirdi about 1831. 2 Karolina Ragnheidur born about 1833. 3 Elin S. born in June 1834. 4 Sigurdur born at Knuttsstodum on Dec. 3 1835 who later ventured to the eastern part of Iceland where he drowned. 5 Steingrimur born at Tungu March 4 1837 and died March 17 1837. The following are the children of Jonas and Sigridur 6 Hans Sigurjon Jonsson born about March 7 1850. It is known that he was at Tunguheidi in March 30 1869 where he was employed as a hired hand on Raufarhfn. He emigrated to Canada where he homesteaded near Thori Goodman's farm between Baldur and Glenboro Manitoba. In 1938 he gave 100 to Audry Johanna Oddson Snowdon because she had the same name as his brother. When he died in 1940 he left 2000 dollars which at that time could have bought two new cars to his four nieces in-cluding Lena Runa and Pauline Sena. He wanted to send money to his nieces in Iceland but the government would not let him. He left money to pay for the bells in the Glenboro Lutheran Church. He was a warm-hearted bachelor and was shy sincere and a bit of a loner. 7 Sigridur Karolina born about 1853. She was a career mid-wife in Iceland and at Sinclair MB and she usually did not charge for this service. She was out-going stately impressive and for-ward. She married Johann Johanns-son. They danced well and made a smart couple. They farmed and she died north of Reston in about 1960 at age 107. Ka-rolina is seen in the picture at the right in 1943 with her son Gottfred and daughter Veiga. 8 Johann Gottfred born and here is a contradic-tion of his birth date as it here states August 25 but the year is in accord 1854. Sigridur Jonasdottir Einarsson Johann Gottfreds mother from Krossavik born June 36 1830 at Sandi died Sigridur was married to Jonas in 1850 at age 20 and had six children be-ginning when she was 21 and finishing off when she was 31. Three of her children emigrated beginning in 1876 when she was 46. Pall Asmundsson Sigurbjorg Pallsdottirs father from Dagvertagundi Nordur MolIusysla born 10 Feb 1822 died 16 July 1866 probably in Hroarstungu Pall raised sheep and lived close enough to the ocean to fish. His daugh-ter Gudbjorg spoke well of him. Pall died in Iceland on July 16 1866 at the age of 44 when the youngest of his five daughters was still a baby. Ten years later his widow children and son-in-law emigrated to Canada. Thora Eriksdottir from Heykallsstodum born 25 Dec 1824 died 24 July 1889 In 1876 ten years after the death of her husband Thora emigrated to Canada with her five daughters and a son-in-law Eyjolfur Eyjolfon Olson. The family moved to Winnipeg in 1878. Signy Pallsdottir was the oldest of Thora Eriksdottirs three surviving daughters and was born in about 1852 immigrated at about age 24 and died in Winnipeg in 1913 at age 61. She had married Eyjolfur who died in about 1903 when they were still in Iceland. He had a butcher shop and later a laundry. They had six children but only three grew to adulthood. Signy's oldest son was Pall Olson who married Solveig Bardarson and had three sons before his death in 1904. 1 Hilliard Olson who married Etta. And had no children. 2 Asmunder Olson who married Runa and may have had one son. 3 Pall Olson who married Hilda and had no children. These three sons all moved to Seattle and Blaine Washington where they were joined by their mother Solveig. Signy's second son Asmundur Jack Olson married Margaret Johnson in 1902 and had six children. 1 Ruby who married Sveinn Magnusson and had two children June and Barrie who both married. 2 Norman Olson who married and adopted a daughter named Bever-ly. 3 Paul Olson who married and had one son. 4 Valentine who married Harry Lynch and had two children Marga-ret and Norman. 5 Pearl who married Bob Kirk and had no children. 6 Beatrice who married Jack Thomas and had a son John who died in Germany and a daughter named Darlene. Signy was a dressmaker and was the best of the daughters at reading and writing. Since she was oldest she got the most exposure to teaching. In Iceland a minister would usually come and teach. She died in Winnipeg at about age 61 in 1913. Thora's next youngest daughter was Gudbjorg born in about 1854. Thora and Gudbjorg took in washing and Gudbjorg helped her sister Signy with the boarding house at Notre Dame and Spence where she lived. Although she never tried much writing she could do it well enough to send letters to her niece Lena in Winnipeg Lena later married Gudni Thorleifson. Gudbjorg married a man named Eyjolfur at age 65 and died about three years later in 1921. Gudbjorg was described by Lena as a darling who sacrificed her life for her family. Sigurborg was the youngest of the daughters who would survive into adulthood. She was born on Janu-ary 1 1857 and married Johann Gottfred see more below Gudrun was born about 1865 and Sigridur born two years later. They both died in a small pox epidem-ic in New Iceland near Gimli in 1878. Thora Pallsdottirs granddaughter Lena who was born a year after she died heard that her grandmother ran the household - a good organizer and a capable wom-an. She was a good manager - not bad tempered or dominating - but her chil-dren and son-in-laws had to submit to her. This was unusual since in Ice-land the man was usually the headof the home. Thora Eriksdottir died in Winnipeg on July 24 1889 at the age of 65. Johann Gottfred born January 30 1854 at Krossavik in Iceland died July 22 1898 at Reston Manitoba Johann Gottfred was born at Krossavik in the north eastern part of Iceland when his mother Sigridur was 24 years old and his father was 59. His father was a finishing carpenter who moved several times. There is however a family farm at Blikolon which is still in the family and now supports several families. Johann as a young man worked with the sheep and fished. He worked for a Danish fish-ing concern based in Reykjavik and became known as Johann yow Gottfred or Johann who works for Gottfred. At age 22 in 1876 he emigrated to Win-nipeg. Here he found so many Johanssons in the community that he decided to take the name Gottfred. This must be his spelling since the Danish was more than likely Gotfrey. He and his sister Karolina had come from Ice-Blikalon one of the farms associated with Johann Gottfreds family is on the extreme north coast of Melrakkasletta along the bay named Sigurdarstadavik. Map Geodetic Institute Copenhagen 19111914 land on the same trip but did not get to know each other until they were in Winnipeg where Johann worked as a labourer digging ditches and doing carpentry. He was hard working and well liked in Winnipeg. In 1884 at age 30 he married Sigurbjorg Pallsdottir and they rented a small home on the corner of Notre Dame and Young. Their first child born a year later was named Thora. In 1888 after the birth of their third child they moved to the R.M. of Ar-gyle where they squatted on the point of land on the lake across from Grund Church four and half miles north of Baldur. They kept a few cattle and lived a rather meagre existence. Their fourth child Lena was born there in 1890 and they hired Sigurborg Peterson later Reykdal for a while to help out in the house. In 1892 at Sigurbjorgs insistence they made a sudden move out of Argyle and homesteaded some land in Reston. There Thorbiorg Sigrun and Hansena were born between 1892 and 1897. At their new home Johann had a horse and buggy and to pull the plow he like most farmers of the day kept oxen one of whom was named Dick. They had not been able to settle close to other Icelanders but their neighbours would come to help with cutting and threshing and Johann in turn would help them with their work. They farmed by Reston until 1898. Johann contracted a cold in April of that year and lingered in illness until he died of pneumonia in July of 1898 at age 44. Johann was always good tempered and good natured and his wife thought the world of him. Sigurborg Sarah Pallsdottir Palson born January 31 1857 at Dagverdagerdi Iceland died November 20 1936 at Baldur Manitoba Sigurborg spent her childhood in Iceland in her home with her mother and father. Unlike her older sisters she never learned to write not even to sign her name and would instead use a cross as her mark. She did however learn to read. She was very good natured and would always keep busy both as a child and an adult. She immigrated with her mother and family in 1876 at age 19 and chose to go by the name of Sarah Palson. After marrying Johann Gottfred at age 27 she con-tinued to help them earn a living by taking in washing for various people around the neighbourhood. After Johann died when she was 41 a family named Abrahamson let her move her shanty to their farm about 12 miles away where she was now close to Icelandic people. She supported herself by renting out her and Johann's farm at a small yearly rent and by spinning knitting and keeping a few cat-tle to make and sell butter. In 1914 at age 57 she moved to her brother-in-law Eyjolfur's home at Notre Dame and Spence in Winnipeg. His wife Signy had died the previous year. Later she had a small house built for her on the west side of Langruth near her daughter Lena's home. She continued to support herself doing wool work carding knitting and making comforters. In 1927 Sigurborg qualified for a 10 a month old age pension but for four years she was too proud to accept it. She still owned her farm near Reston but for four years during the depression she did not earn any money from it. Her daughters and sons-in-law would say to her Why bother keeping it and paying taxes on it in that dried out country She finally was unable to pay the taxes and let it go for tax sale. In the photo at right Sigurborg is seen with her daughters Pauline left and Lena right. She died on November 20 1936 at the home of her daughter Hansena in Baldur. She had earlier broken her hip and had spent three months in a cast and after that had to use some kind of a support. The following is and exerpt from her obituary the author of which is un-known. I first met Sigurborg when I was a boy newly arrived from Iceland in the year 1883. That winter I stayed with my parents and my brother in a little house on Young Street in Winnipeg called Eyjolfsstadir or that was the way the house was named in those days. This was the home of Eyjolfur Ol-son and his wife Signy Palsdottir. My relative Rev Jon Bjarnason who at that time was at Seydisfjordur in Iceland had refered me to them because he considered them very helpful. I was not disappointed because in no other Western-Icelandic home did newly arrived Icelanders finds such hospitality and helpfulness.eyjolfsstadir on Young street there were three sisters stay-ing there Signy the mistress of the house Gudbjorg and Sigurborg. Thora Karolina Gottfred Watts born February 13 1885 in Winnipeg died December 20 1921 in Langruth Both as a child and an adult Thora was shy and not very outgoing but was hard working even tempered and got along quite well where she worked. She was healthy and like her parents never belonged to any organizations aside from the church. Her father died when she was 13. She stayed with her mother along with her youngest sisters Sena and Sigrun. Soon after she went and worked as a maid in Reston at the old folks home in Gim-li and other places working wherever she could. Thora later came to Langruth because her sister Lena was there and worked in the hotel. She married Jack Watts who had returned from the Great War in December of 1919 when she was 35. He was able to get a farm north of Langruth probably with assistance from the govern-ment since he was a veteran. They had twin girls in 1920. In 1921 Thora had another baby Caroline and died of septisemia a complication of childbirth. People used to say that the doctor who delivered the baby at their home wasn't clean enough but Thora's family never made any complaints. Thoras sister took the twins and another sister took the baby. Caroline the baby died of smallpox. Jack then sold the farm and moved west to Waskada with the twins 1 Alice Watts married Bill Palmericka. No children. b. 6 August 1920 d. Palina Kristine Gottfred Magnusson born September 6 1888 in Winnipeg died 29 November 1967 in Spy Hill Saskatchewan Palina was almost 10 years old when her father died in the summer of 1898. Her uncle Eyjolfur and aunt Signy came to the funeral and took Palina along with her seven year old sister Lena with them to live in Winnipeg. She was less good na-tured than Lena and did not get along as well with the borders at the house. After grade four she quit school and went to work as her teacher's maid. When she was 19 on November 22 1907 she married Sigurdur Mag-nusson and they moved to Spy Hill just across the border in Sas-katchewan. When Larus said that he couldn't see the plane they all knew that some-thing was wrong. Palina's husband died in 1957 when she was 69 and Paulina died ten years later in No-vember of 1967 of old age. Eyjolfina Signy Lena Gottfred Thorleifson born November 21 1890 died 20 October 1985 Lena was born on a point of land just across the lake from Grund Church north of Baldur. Their parents were poor squatters who raised cattle but had enough to hire Sigurborg Peterson to help with the care of the new baby. This was the maternal grandmother of Thora Johannesson who would later marry Lena's son Allan When she was five her mother Sigurborg was sick so Lena and two of her sisters who lived 12 miles away with friends named Abrahamson Kristjon and their daughter Hanna. That winter Sigfus and Margaret Benidictson came from Winnipeg and also stayed at this home. They were able to teach the three how to read and write Iceland-ic. After her father's death in 1898 the eight-year-old Lena and her sister Palina Lena is on the left in the adja-cent photo Palina on the right went with their uncle Eyjolfur and aunt Signy to live with them at the boarding house they kept at the corner of Notre Dame and Spence in the Icelandic part of Winnipeg. It would be four years before Lena was able to see her mother again. Lena was a good natured and willing child and people liked her. She got along well with the boarders and was Always on the run for everybody. This included going around the neighbourhood to pick up washing with a wag-on or sleigh and later with a bicycle. Lena would also read the Icelandic newspapers to her aunt. The spectre of some of the borders's heavy drinking contributed towards her life-long opposition to the consump-tion of alcohol. When I was in Winnipeg staying at the boarding house I saw so many young men drunk. I grew to hate it. Lena had her grade 10 when she started teach-ing. She went back to Normal School to get her 2nd class permanent teaching certificate in 1916. In 1907 at age 17 the Secretary-Treasurer asked her to open the school at Big Point. She boarded with the family of farmer/merchant Olafur Thorleifson where she met his son Gudni whom she married five years later on November 21 1912 at a double wedding with Gudni's sister Mary. Lena had met Mary in Normal School. Lena and Gudni had three children 1 Allan Olafur Thorleifson born on Dec 17 1919 died May 23 1977 of Multiple Myoloma. She hired girls to help with her children. She cared for her children and her ill-tempered mother-in-law Gudbjorg un-til returning to teach off and on in 1940. By the time she retired in the late 1950s she had accumulated 24 years of teaching in Langruth and surrounding rural schools. Lena was active in the Luthern Church and belonged to the Chris-tian Endeavour Society and the Woman's Institute where she was sec-retary for many years. She started the first Sunday School to be held in Langruth with lessons in both Icelandic and English but hymns only in Icelandic. Lena began writing a column titled Hecla in the Langruth Weekly Herald. After that paper folded she was published in the Manitoba Liberal Leader later the Portage Leader. In 1963 her readers saw the end of her 46 years in journalism during which she penned more than 2400 articles. She was honoured by management and Vopni Press representatives for the quality of her work. It had a letter from home flavour that had endeared her to her readers. In 1971 Lena wrote a detailed history of the local Lutheran church and its community. During her life Lena enjoyed good health except for her knees and continuous ulcerated sores from varicose veins which may have been weakened by years of standing up while teaching. She died of old age on 20 October 1985.
