Mar. 2 7 , 197 6 d. 1915 r I -1 -SAMUEL JOSEPH MOFFATT was born in Eastern Cotner, Ontario in 188t, one of nine children of Robert & Jane Moffatt who had emigrated from Ireland in the early 1800's. Dad came to Manitoba in 1904 and was a carpenter in the Altamont & Manitou area until he became employed with the C.P.R. in 1905. He remained in its employ for 37 years. Dad was an industrious man who was never idle. However, he was so inunaculate we never did see him in work clothes. His greatest talent was landscaping and we have all developed a love of gardening. Nurtured with a hoe or rake or hedge clippers our four brothers would likely be found clipping hedges or mowing lawns when other boys were goofing off at the dam or ball diamond. For years, Dad had a colony of bees and the boys were trained in all the fascinating facets of the bee business. Records show that in 1934, 1000 lbs. of honey were sold at 10~ a lb. Dad's interest in hunting fostered a love for guns and all his sons and their sons have pursued this manly sport. Dads predominating characteristic was a desire for order. He liked everything in it's place and as Morley Torgov the writer said of his father "He loved horizontals and verticals and 90 degree angles and perfect circles." Dad's shop was incredible -tools lined up and categorized. We all needed our parts papers if we were sent to the shop for a tool. A good provider, Dad took pride in dressing us well. Each November, a barrel of spy apples ordered from Ontario arrived and in the spring one of our fondest treats arrived -several gallons of maple syrup from Ontario. There is not one of us who didn't fear his rigid discipline but his ability to keep us surrounded with cleanliness, order and attractive surroundings, no doubt, influenced the way we have developed our lives. EDNA ALEXENA MOFFATT born Sept. 24, 1890, was one of eight children of Sam & Jenny Smith who had moved to the Middleton district near Manitou from Renfrew, Ontario. Hom became a seamstress before her marriage to Dad in 1910. They took up residence in La Riviere in the home Bink & Jean now live. If mother possessed a fault, none of us children could think of one. Respected and admired by all who knew her, she lived until she was 86. Still independent at 86 she and our Aunt Ann maintained their own suite, both living an active social life. Each year, mother travelled the length of cïanada visiting her seven children, catching her own planes -never wanting to inconvenience anyone. She was a welcome visitor. Tea towels would get whitened, curtains would get a freshening, socks would get mended, hems lengthened and 't:iread,doughnuts and rolled oatmeal cookies would appear. She had that great gift of never interfering in the lives of her children and grandchildren and was never judgemental. We were always proud of her because she had excellent taste & dressed so smartly. She could fit in anywhere and young people enjoyed being around her because she had a real sense of humour. Mother was active in all community affairs, being a member of the United Church, Legion Auxiliary and Easter~Star and in latter years in Saskatoon, a volunteer for Y.M.C.A. Like all her brothers and sisters from this very fine Smith family she was always sensitive to the simple needs of friends and neighbours. -2 -EDNA ALEXENA MOFFATT (cont'd) I have an image of morn taking fresh bread from the oven when we came home at four, quilting bees in the sun room, more precious still, the click of her needles as she knit in the dark, long after we had gone to bed. What infinite courage it must have taken for mother to leave most of her children behind and move to Saskatchewan. In the 30's, it was a rare occurrence for a woman to make that decision. She had so few years to influence the quality of our lives but her strength has been an example and we have all turned out to be half-decent persons. As one of her grandchildren said when she passed away "We lost a lady". ************************************************************************\ ****** 1. We recalled the skating parties on the river by the Red Bridge and rides on Merv Boyd's ice sleigh., He delivered blocks of ice to homes for melting for washing. Every child raised in La Riviere during the thirties recognize the two giant scars in the eastern hills as the old tobaggan runs. I watch for them each time I round the curve going in to La Riviere. What could match the excitement of Ski-Train Sunday in the late thirties and early forties? It brought visitors from Winnipeg for the day and free rides for local residents back & forth to the ski slopes. Is there a child from La Riviere who didn't play on the round table at the Round House? Do you remember when the curling rink was nestled in the hill at the back of the Round House? Is there an adult who doesn't remember using cardboard to slide down the snow mounds made at the open air rink from scraping ice? For teenagers there was the dance pavillion on the bank of the river at the dam south of town. Bink treasured our,evening walks with Mother & Mary Fraser and Alec & Nellie. We remember with awe those two Dr three concerts called Chatawqua that were held every year.
